JERSEY CITY — A 54-year-old man who was apparently off his medication threatened to take the guns of police officers and “blow” their “brains out.”

On Sunday, the Oak Street man went to the Journal Square police desk, said he needed his medication, prompting police to call for EMTs. While waiting, he became agitated, threw food on the floor and destroyed a telephone, the criminal complaint says.

The man was placed under arrest and it was determined there were two warrants for his arrest. He was and taken to the Jersey City Medical Center by ambulance, according to the complaint.

While at the hospital, the man told police officers “I’m going to take your gun and shoot you. If I had a gun right now, I would blow your brains out.” He is also charged with kicking one officer in the arm and a second in the leg. His behavior frightened people and caused a crowd to gather, the complaint alleges.

The Oak Street man was charged with aggravated assault on police officers, making terroristic threats, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct, according to the complaint.

He made his first appearance on the charges Tuesday in Criminal Justice Reform Court in Jersey City via video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny. At the hearing, the state moved to detain him through the course of his prosecution and a detention hearing is scheduled for Friday.
