N.J. diner employee carjacked while leaving restaurant

An employee of a popular Route 22 diner was attacked and carjacked while leaving work early Wednesday, Scotch Plains police said.

The 43-year-old Belleville resident went outside to warm up his Toyota Camry as his shift at the Scotchwood Diner on Route 22 wound down just before 12:30 a.m., according to Det. Let. Jeff Briel.

When the worker returned to the vehicle a couple of minutes later, two men assaulted him.

A third man got inside the running car and the trio fled east on Route 22. The car was found abandoned minutes later on Lawrence Avenue in Westfield, police said.

Police dispatched a K-9 unit but were unable to locate the men. The diner employee suffered minor injuries to his hands but refused medical treatment.
