Newark airport terminal partially evacuated as a consequence of tranformer hearth

An underground transformer fire broke out beneath a restricted access road at Newark Liberty International Airport Friday and forced a partial evacuation of Terminal C, officials said.

The fire, which ignited in a PSE&G manhole near gate 71 at 11:14 a.m., has been extinguished, officials said. The C-1 wing was evacuated, spokesman Joe Pentangelo said.

Flights have not been affected, according to authorities. A crew from PSE&G is on the scene along with the Newark Fire Department as conditions are still smoky.

Terminals A and B are fully operational.

PSE&G has been responding to tens of thousands of power outages throughout New Jersey on Friday. The problems have been attributed to heavy rain and salt from melting snow affecting power substations.
