Odor of burnt marijuana leads to Hoboken drug arrest

Hoboken police following the odor of burnt marijuana caught up with a 22-year-old city resident and charged him with multiple drug offenses Wednesday, authorities said.

Officers on patrol in the area of Willow Avenue and Third Street saw Edward Mongon walking with a woman after 10 p.m. Wednesday, Hoboken police Lt. Edgardo Cruz said. They saw Mongon take out an item, “manipulate it” and later light and smoke it, Cruz noted.

As police approached Mongon and the woman, the odor got stronger and Mongon tried to hide an item between two parked cars and another item in his jacket when he saw the officers getting closer, Cruz said.

Police found a clear plastic bag of suspected marijuana on Mongon, who was charged with tampering with evidence, hindering apprehension, possession of marijuana, under the influence of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, Cruz said.

The woman was not charged.
