For Emily Alexander and Keith Whitaker Jr., Valentine’s Day 2018 was also their wedding day. The two, both 21 and of Pennsville, were married Wednesday by Salem County Clerk Gilda Gill at the clerk’s office in downtown Salem.

“It was very special to get married on our first Valentine’s Day together. That’s what made it awesomely amazing,” Alexander said after she and her husband exchanged vows. “I got to marry my best friend on Valentine’s Day.”

For Alexander and Whitaker, having about a dozen family and friends present as they traded wedding vows meant a lot to them. The couple, who met in May 2017, is expecting a daughter, Lila Ann Whitaker, in April.

As county clerk, Gill said she has been presiding over Valentine’s Day ceremonies for about 15 years. In the past, Gill has had more couples to marry, but this year it was just the new Mr. and Mrs. Whitaker who turned out.

“Valentines’ Day is a special day — a day of love and expressing how you feel about others,” Gill said. “I just thought it would be something a little bit different.”
